What happened to Licensing, or Why did SM just unregister?

I'm having a discussion with someone about disk space use and software, so I grab SpaceMonger and suddenly it's unregistered in the middle of scanning. I try to log in to my EdgeRunner account as that's where I bought it, but it says that the password is wrong. Fine.. I know Stardock and Edgerunner are almost identical, so I try my Stardock account. It said it was successful in logging in, but that I didn't have a key associated to my account.

So.. I register my key with Stardock, that gets it working, but... the question still remains. What's going on with Spacemonger? Is there still development happening? (It still crashes for me on occasion on Win10) Why did Stardock's system take over licensing?

SpaceMonger was being sold by EdgeRunner but has migrated to Stardock for sales and support. No updates are currently planned.
